Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) has consistently been demonstrated to be the most effective psychological treatment for the anxiety disorders. CBT is a skills-based approach which centres around three essential components:
- Symptom management to alleviate anxiety and increase helpful coping strategies
- Challenging maladaptive cognitions that cause and maintain anxiety, and
- Modifying behaviour to reduce avoidance and re-engaging in life
As an adjunct to CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), mindfulness and schema therapy are also drawn upon where appropriate to suit the specific needs of individuals.
